Founders keep 10% of brewery

August 29, 2019

This post was inspired by an article from MiBiz.

In 1997, Founders Brewing was established in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan by Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers. They sold 30% of the brewery to Spanish Big Beer, Mahou-San Miguel Group, in 2014. That 30% sale of the brewery negated the craft beer status of the brewery as defined by the Brewers Association.

Recent documents filed with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission show that all but 10% the remaining shares of the brewery are being sold to Mahou-San Miguel Group. Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers will each remain 5% owners of Founders Brewing.

It will be interesting to watch the Avery Brewing ownership situation in Colorado. Mahou-San Miguel Group and Founders Brewing own a combined 70% of Avery.
