Back in January 2018, Mahou San Miguel bought 30% of Colorado’s Avery Brewing. Now, Mahou San Miguel has purchased another 40%; making it the majority owner of the brewery. Interestingly, the additional 40% was acquired in partnership with Founders Brewing, which is another brewery that Mahou San Miguel also has 30% ownership in.
Since the original Spanish Big Beer investment, Avery was no longer considered a “craft brewer” by the Brewers Association, the craft beer industry trade group. It’s craft beer definition stipulates that no more than 25 percent of a company can be “owned or controlled by an alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer.”
